The final project is a semester-long project spent doing research on a topic in information visualization. At the end of the semester, students will present their work in a class presentation and submit a paper detailing their techniques and/or findings. Topics can range from explainable artificial intelligence to new network visualization techniques to studies of multiple view visualizations on different devices. You will report on your progress every couple of weeks during class, and the project will culminate with a final in-class presentation and paper.
Presentations will be the last week of the course, November 30 and December 2. Students will be randomly assigned to a day. The presentations should be 20 minutes long, and you should be prepared to answer questions. Demonstrations of work are welcome, but make a backup video in case something doesn’t quite work as planned.
Papers are due on the day set aside for the final exam, December 9. The paper should be a polished research paper and should follow IEEE or ACM formatting guidelines. I suggest using TVCG’s templates for LaTeX. The paper should follow the standard format, with a motivating introduction, review of related work and its relationship to the work in the paper, and details on the techniques/approaches as well as evaluation. The paper should include a discussion of the results which can include some reasoning about what the results mean and where future work might go. Include figures, but be judicious about your use of space.
Turn in the paper and accompanying code (or link to a repository) to Blackboard by December 9, 2021.
