In order to use encryption for some network services, the computer science department at NIU has created a CA certificate. A CA is a Certification Authority. The CA certificate will be used to sign the encryption certificates of a number of network servers in the department.
This CA certificate is and is under control of Professor Neil Rickert.
To facilitate these services, we are encouraging our students, faculty, and others to import this certificate into their browsers. Your browser will use this certificate to verify the identity of an encryption certificate by other servers of our department.
When installing this certificate, you may be prompted for a name.
I suggest "CS.NIU.EDU CA" or even "Rickert CA".
Some browsers may give you an option between downloading as a file,
or opening in your browser. If you are offered this choice, you
should choose to open the file in your browser.
The actions you take in installing a CA certificate are all reversible. At any time you can go to the security options in your browser, and delete the certificate.
When you install, you will see some security notices. If you continue with the installation, you will be asked to select the uses for the certificate. I recommend that you check the boxes to accept this certificate both for certifying network sites, and for certifying email addresses. I suggest that you do not check the box for certifying software.
