PCI - Peripheral Component Interconnect 1993 Intel Separate from the local memory bus. Uses independent interface chips Can be used in non-8086 systems. Intel holds patent o interface chips. Protocol licensed for free, but chips must be bought. 32-bit bus 33 MHz Chip set provides bus mastering (arbitration). Burst mode - takes over sequential addressing of a block of data. Modified higher speed version seen in the AGP protocol. Has its own interrupt handling which it projects on to the systems interrupt handling. Tends to be limited to 4-6 interface slots. Some protocols such as serial connection is not handled by PCI but by the older ISA protocol and interface. PCI allows up to four IDE interfaces. PCI provides enough bus mastering to allow for DMA.
