Website for Visual Design for the Modern Web, by Penny McIntire. Berkeley, CA: New Riders, 2008. Currently available on Amazon and at all your favorite booksellers. ISBN: 978-0321-51538-4

Just as great artists must understand their tools, great web designers must understand the technology behind their art. In Visual Design for the Modern Web, I hope to show novice web designers how to use their tools—including HTML, CSS, and JavaScript—in conjunction with the principles of aesthetics and usability to become masters of their craft. Chapters begin with explanations of the terminology and techniques of web structures, then demonstrate how to apply the rules of design to create beautiful sites.

This book:

  • Illustrates how fundamental principles of design apply to the web.
  • Includes charts, diagrams, and graphics to enhance learning and retention.
  • Covers site analysis, navigation, layout, color, graphics, typography, and forms.
  • Demonstrates multiple techniques for getting just the right look and feel for your web sites.
  • Focuses on the characteristics that make sites usable, engaging, and memorable.

About the Author

I have been teaching Computer Science at Northern Illinois University since 1982. My Introduction to Analysis and Design textbook (McGraw-Hill, under the name of Penny Kendall) was published in three editions over two decades. While my pocket protector and the repair tape on my glasses are well earned, my dissatisfaction with the jumbo box of 256 crayons was the first portent of artistic yearnings that eventually led to many years of exhibiting nationally in the hand-sculpted, one-of-a-kind art doll market. All of my interests—computer science, teaching, systems analysis and design, and art—finally coalesced when I began teaching web design in the year 2000.
