1 Downloading and Installing A Terminal Emulator

A terminal emulator is a program that allows one computer to connect to another computer using a graphical interface. Through the terimnal emulator a person can perform actions on the other computer.

NIU students can connect to the Marist IBM mainframe using a terminal emulator. This provides the students with full access to an IBM mainframe. Using the terminal emulator, it is possible to create files, write computer programs, and run those computer programs on the mainframe. With this setup, NIU Computer Science students can meet the IBM Assembler and Cobol programming requirements of their classes.

The NIU Computer Science Resources page offers links to two different 3270 terminal emulators. QWS3270 is an older emulator which runs only on Windows XP. TN3270 is a newer emulator which will also run on Vista and XP.
