Department of Computer Science

Brief Background

After obtaining my Ph. D. in Mathematics, I came to NIU as an Assistant Professor of Mathematics in 1978. In the summer of 1980 I moved to then newly formed Department of Computer Science and started teaching computer courses. In May 1984, I left NIU and joined AT&T Bell Laboratories. The Bell Laboratories became a part of the new AT&T spin off company called Lucent Technologies in 1996, so I became an employee of Lucent. During my 17 and a half years at Lucent, I worked on various assignments including all phases of Software Development, Process Management, Software Quality Engineering and Quality Management. Since taking early retirement from Lucent in July 2001, I have been back to teaching Computer Science at NIU as a Visiting (Part-time) faculty. A few years ago Lucent Technologies merged with the French telecommunication company Alcatel, naming the joint company as Alcatel-Lucent.

When I was a fulltime faculty at NIU during 1978-84, it was the mainframe computing era and NIU's Computer Science curriculum was known for its intense hands-on mainframe programming courses. In the job market our students were preferred over well-known schools such as UI-Urbana-Champaign and Northwestern. Some of our graduates of those time are well-placed today in the industry. One of our students from 1980.s, Mr. Wheeler G. Coleman was recently appointed to NIU Board of Trustees. Though our curriculum has changed considerably over the years, we have retained our emphasis on hands-on programming. We have also continued to offer mainframe courses to prepare our students to nitch job market in mainframe computing.
